Pelvic Health

Anyone can suffer with poor pelvic health. In women pain, incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse is common during and following pregnancy, and in later life. In men, pain, incontinence, prostate gland related issues and sexual dysfunction are common.

Whilst these may be difficult issues to discuss, current UK research indicates a high prevalence if pelvic health related difficulties across all ages.

60% of women have at least one symptom of poor pelvic health and 69% of these have not spoken to or sought help from a healthcare professional. Of these, 39% thought their symptoms were normal and 21% were too embarrassed. 11% of all men face poor pelvic health symptoms, with 1 in 3 men over the age of 65 experiencing urinary incontinence and up to 70% of men experiencing incontinence following prostate surgery. Erectile dysfunction is incredibly common affecting 58.2% of all men, with surprisingly, the group most vulnerable to erectile dysfunction being those between the age of 25 and 34, therefore impacting on 74.6% of young men. Due to stigma, many men may not report pelvic floor issues, leading to underestimation of the true nature and extent of the issue.

Poor pelvic health can manifest as a range of symptoms including:

  • Urinary incontinence, urgency and frequency.
  • Difficulty, pain or a burning sensation when emptying the bladder.
  • Bowel issues such as incontinence, constipation, pain, pressure or incomplete voiding.
  • Chronic pelvic pain including lower back, hips or groin.
  • Involuntary muscle spasms in the pelvic area including vaginismus in women.
  • A sensation of heaviness, dragging or bulging in the pelvic area
  • Pelvic organ prolapse..
  • External genitalia pain.
  • Sexual dysfunction including:
  • Pain during sex.
  • Reduced sensation or difficulty reaching orgasm.
  • Premature or painful ejaculation.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Prostatitis (inflammation of the prostrate gland) in men causing pain, urinary issues and sexual dysfunction.

Ask for help...

Many individuals suffer in silence and those who do seek help experience lengthy NHS waiting lists, only to have the same pelvic physiotherapy, regardless of their underlying symptoms and individual needs. Treatment can be ineffective, leading to long term suffering and feelings that difficulties can never be helped. This is not the case.
